Maha: 3 workers die of suffocation while cleaning sewage tank in Chandrapur

Three contract workers of Western Coalfields Limited died of suffocation while cleaning an underground sewage tank in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. The police gave this information on Wednesday.

Rajura police station inspector Chandrashekhar Bahadur said that two others fainted in the incident that took place on Tuesday in Sasti-Dhopatla town of Ballarpur area.

At around 9 in the morning, four workers entered the 10-feet deep tank to clean it. But, when they did not come out after a long time, some other workers informed the local people, he said.

A JCB machine was used to remove the slab covering the tank. Later, a sweeper of Rampur Gram Panchayat also got down in the tank, but he also fainted for some time. He and four other workers were pulled out by the locals and taken to the hospital.

Two laborers Raju Janjarla and Subhash Khandalkar were declared brought dead, the police officer said.

The condition of another worker Sushil Korde, who was admitted to a hospital in Nagpur, was critical, where he also died during treatment, the official said.

He said that the treatment of cleaner Shankar Andgula and another employee Pramod Vavitkar is going on in Chandrapur.
